Position Title: Forensic Nurse

Job Purpose:
The Forensic Nurse is responsible for providing expert medical care, forensic examination, and evidence collection for victims of crime or individuals involved in legal proceedings. This role requires a comprehensive understanding of medical and legal protocols, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Conduct comprehensive medical assessments and forensic examinations of patients who have experienced trauma, including victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, child abuse, or other crimes.
2. Collect, document, and preserve physical evidence from patients in accordance with established forensic protocols, ensuring proper chain of custody.
3. Provide compassionate care and emotional support to patients during examinations, ensuring their physical and emotional well-being throughout the process.
4. Accurately document findings and observations in detailed reports, adhering to legal and medical requirements.
5. Collaborate with law enforcement agencies, attorneys, and other healthcare professionals to provide expert testimony in legal proceedings, as required.
6. Maintain a high level of knowledge and understanding of forensic science, medical advancements, and legal regulations relevant to the field.
7. Participate in ongoing professional development activities, including conferences, workshops, and continuing education programs, to enhance skills and stay abreast of industry best practices.
8. Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team, including law enforcement officials, social workers, forensic scientists, and legal professionals, to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care for patients.
9. Maintain strict confidentiality and adhere to ethical and legal standards when handling sensitive information and patient records.
10. Contribute to the development and implementation of forensic nursing protocols, policies, and procedures, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
1. Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) from an accredited institution.
2. Valid and unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license in the state of practice.
3. Minimum of two years of clinical nursing experience, preferably in emergency medicine, critical care, or forensic nursing.
4. Successful completion of a forensic nursing program or relevant certification in forensic nursing (e.g., Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner - SANE).
5. Thorough understanding of forensic nursing principles, evidence collection techniques, and legal requirements.
6. Proficient knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology.
7. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to make critical decisions under pressure.
8. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to effectively communicate complex medical and forensic information to diverse audiences.
9. Ability to work independently and as part of a team, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and cultural sensitivity.
10. High level of professionalism, integrity, and empathy when dealing with sensitive and traumatic situations.
11. Proficient in using electronic medical record (EMR) systems and other relevant software applications for documentation and report writing.
